DPP: A WAY OF LIFE
Jerry B., an 80-year-old man, has participated in the Greater Valley YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) since January 2021. He discovered the program after seeing a Facebook post in fall 2020, and made the choice to participate because he “wants to be healthy.” Jerry wanted to improve his health while avoiding a diabetes diagnosis, in addition to losing some weight and working towards better lab results. After reaching out to the Y, Jerry was connected to a DPP cohort group, and started the program.
Jerry attended a virtual information session about DPP in December 2020, and after meeting the supportive team, signed up to participate. Since this time, Jerry has found great success towards the program’s goals of losing 5-7% body weight, as well as participating in at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity.
When asked what he likes most about DPP, Jerry states he likes the support. Additionally, Jerry shares he feels he “actually has a life coach” that is invested in his success. Jerry especially likes the program’s current virtual format, which aids his participation as he is currently unable to drive—the result of a healing injury. Jerry adds that, “the way that the program is given is wonderful,”feeling he can stay connected to a supportive, non-judgmental group easily. Excitedly, Jerry is seeing progress towards his health goals. He shares that he finds the program “practical,” with personalized goals that are “reasonable” and realistic.
Jerry adds that the Diabetes Prevention Program “is not a diet, but it’s a new way of life.” He ends his reflection stating,“actually it’s enjoyable – in other words it’s fun. I couldn’t ask for anything more - it’s like having a life coach to come to me personally but at the same time I’m doing it with a group of others who are actually becoming more beautiful. It’s a way of life.”
