Allentown Branch of the Greater Valley YMCA Will Host Warming Station for Second Year

[Allentown, October 30, 2019] – During the upcoming winter season, the Greater Valley YMCA, Allentown Branch will host the 64-bed Warming Station once again. The Warming Station will run from November 1st through April 30th, opening at 7 PM and closing every morning at 7 AM.  Due to community partnerships and financial support, the Y’s Warming Station will be a sustainable project for a second year in a row.

Throughout the winter last year, the Warming Station provided 8,609 beds* to guests during the cold season. With a high of 48 men and 24 women in a single night, the Station served the homeless population with a safe place to sleep, a warm shower, and a dignified sense of community. On extremely cold evenings, the Warming Station opened early, closed late, and provided additonal cots to guests filling the Warming Station past the 64-bed capacity.

Because of community support this year, the Y was able to make key updates to the Warming Station. These updates include brand new flooring, 3 new sinks in the shower area, 3 new bunks, 3 more security cameras, an upgraded space for the Lehigh Valley Street Medicine team, and an upgraded luggage space for guests’ belongings.

David Fagerstrom, CEO and President of the Greater Valley YMCA, shares, “Without the generous support from our anonymous donor, the City of Allentown, Lehigh County, First Presbyterian Church of Allentown and other countless groups, the Warming Station Project may not have been possible for another year. Thanks to this support, the Y is proud to sustainably host the Warming Station for its second season at the Y.”

The Warming Station serves a variety of people from many walks of life, many with cars and jobs, and some individuals who just hit a rough patch in life.  One Warming Station guest shared, “The Warming Station bridged the gap for me when I lost my job. I just got another job and put down the first month’s rent on an apartment with the first paycheck.” This guest thanks the anonymous donor for their support, stating, “You gave me the opportunity to become a productive member of society again.”

The Allentown Warming Station is located at 425 South 15th St. To help make the Allentown Warming Station sustainable for years to come, text YWARMING to 71777 or visit

*The term “provided beds” reflects the number of beds occupied each evening, and includes duplicate counts of unique individuals.
