Saucon YMCA Takes Big Step Forward

On Monday, May 10, the Board of Upper Saucon Township unanimously approved a property lease with The Greater Valley YMCA, which is a key step in bringing a new Y to the Lehigh Valley’s southern region.
Approximately 10 acres will be leased to the YMCA adjacent to Upper Saucon Township Community Park. “It is a fantastic location for a YMCA community center,” stated Jen Johnson, chair of the committee of local volunteers. “We’ve been working for over seven years to bring a Y here. Our group vetted over eighteen other properties. We feel that the synergy with the township, how a Y would fit naturally next to the park, and strong interest from major potential collaborators shot this location to the top of our list.”
The presentation to the township supervisors laid out the vision for what the Saucon Creek YMCA would offer. “The new Y would provide opportunities for people of all abilities to get and stay fit, an indoor pool, fully licensed and accredited care programs, activities for seniors and teens, and more,” stated David Fagerstrom, President/CEO of the Greater Valley YMCA. “The Y that we are envisioning will be top shelf. The residents of the area will expect nothing less.”
Next steps will be for the Y to conduct a feasibility study to test support for the project. While a 2015 community feedback survey indicated strong interest, the Y will pursue due diligence in listening to the community and leaders, as well as determining what the local residents need today and for the next generation. Ultimately, the timing, scope and scale of a new Y would be determined by the desire and generosity of the community and key partners.
“It will take leaders in the community to help the Y become established here,” stated Fagerstrom. “YMCAs rarely push into a community. Instead it’s a combined effort to pull the Y in”.

Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. At The Y, no child, family or adult is turned away due to an inability to pay.
