The Y will receive $50,000 over 5 years to support the Warming Station operation in Allentown.

[Allentown, January 16, 2020] – The Greater Valley YMCA, Allentown Branch’s 64-bed Warming Station is halfway through the winter season, serving a high of 57 guests in a single night during January. The Warming Station is open daily from November 1st through April 30th, and offers guests a safe place to sleep, a warm shower, access to washing machines and dryers, and a dignified sense of community.  New this season and due to community support, the Y also provides healthy, prepared meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays to Warming Station guests.

The YMCA is a cause-driven organization, with an emphasis on social responsibility and community engagement.  Many partners in Allentown align with the Y’s community impact initiatives, and have contributed to the Warming Station over the last two years.  Recently, another partner has stepped forward to support the future of the Warming Station.

City Center Investment Corp. has pledged support of $10,000 per year for five years, totaling $50,000 towards the Y’s Warming Station.  “Building Community” is the community-engagement initiative of City Center Investment Corp., its employees, and principals. The initiative aims to revitalize downtown Allentown and its surrounding neighborhoods into a sustainable, vibrant urban community by providing financial support, in-kind donations and volunteer service.

“We are proud to pledge $50,000 to the YMCA Warming Station,” said City Center Investment Corporation President J.B. Reilly. “The Allentown YMCA introduced me to the United Way and the importance of giving back more than 25 years ago. They continue to be a critical community partner in Downtown Allentown.”

Because of community support like this, the Y can better serve guests and make key updates to the Warming Station. In 2019, these updates included brand new flooring, 3 new sinks in the shower area, 3 new bunks, 3 more security cameras, an upgraded space for the Lehigh Valley Street Medicine team, and an upgraded luggage space for guests’ belongings.

David Fagerstrom, President & CEO of the Greater Valley YMCA, shares, “J.B. Reilly has a long history of giving back to the entire Lehigh Valley community.  His involvement with the YMCA dates back to his time playing basketball at the YMCA as a kid, and then continued on as Board President of the Allentown YMCA in the early 1990’s. City Center’s five-year commitment of $10,000 per year gives us all comfort, knowing we have continued resources to help keep the underserved in our community warm and safe during the winter.”

The Warming Station serves a variety of people from many walks of life, many with cars and jobs, and some individuals who just hit a rough patch in life.  One Warming Station guest shared, “The Warming Station bridged the gap for me when I lost my job. I just got a new job and put down the first month’s rent on an apartment with the first paycheck.” This guest wanted to thank the community, stating, “You gave me the opportunity to become a productive member of society again.”

The Allentown Warming Station is located at 425 South 15th St. To help make the Allentown Warming Station sustainable for years to come, text YWARMING to 71777 or visit gv-ymca.org/donate.
