The Greater Valley YMCA will provide cooked meals on Tuesday and Thursdays to Warming Station guests.
[Allentown, November 13, 2019] – The Greater Valley YMCA, Allentown Branch’s 64-bed Warming Station is open for the winter season. The Warming Station will run from November 1st through April 30th, from 7 PM to 7 AM daily. Currently, the Warming Station offers guests a safe place to sleep, a warm shower, access to washing machines and dryers, and a dignified sense of community. Throughout the last winter season, the Y provided packaged snacks and coffee to guests, but this year will be different.
Due to special funding of $10,000 from the Downtown Allentown Community Development Initiative (DACDI), the Allentown Warming Station will now be able to offer cooked, evening meals to guests on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting December 10th. The cost of the meal for each guest comes to $3.61 per person, and would cost $231 per day to provide a hot meal to all 64-guests. The generous $10,000 gift will help cover 43 nights of evening meals at the Allentown Warming Station.
The Allentown Branch of the Greater Valley YMCA hosts a full service, commerical kitchen. The kitchen is Child and Adult Food Program (CACFP) Certified, and the Y employs a full-time cook. The meals and snacks for daily childcare programs, the after-school dinner program at the Y, and the meals provided for the Hibernia Firestation’s “Firehouse Fridays” all come from the Allentown Y’s kitchen.
David Fagerstrom, CEO and President of the Greater Valley YMCA, shares, “Thanks to the DACDI’s support, the Y is proud to expand food access to the Warming Station guests two times a week. Our end goal is to serve a hot meal to guests every night, but we are short funding. A week of meals at the warming station costs $1,617. To support a day, week, month, or entire season of meals, please contact me. We’d ideally like people to be able to go to bed each night having eaten a warm, nutritious meal.”
In presenting the gift, Don Bernhard, Executive Director of DACDI expressed his appreciation to the YMCA for what they and many partners have accomplished with this facility in such a short period of time and wished them success in in further expansion of the feeding operation.
