7th Grade Initiative

At the Y, adopt healthy lifestyles at an early age.

7GI Purpose Statement & Impact:

The Seventh Grade Initiative helps youth realize their potential to become active, engaged, and thriving adults. Guided by role models who create a safe, nurturing environment, 7th graders develop confidence, independence, self-expression, responsibility, self-control and teamwork during their early teens at the beginning of their transition from childhood to adulthood. The 7GI program strengthens youth protective factors and helps them adopt mature, healthy habits.

Why 7th Graders?
Research shows that seventh grade is a critical time in a young person’s life when exposure to risk factors greatly increases. Risk factors are conditions or influences that have been shown to increase the likelihood for unhealthy behaviors. It is also during the early teen years that youth begin to distance themselves from family and positive supports systems.
The Y makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower these youth to reach their personal potential. We also provide youth with the knowledge, skills, character, and passion to be more active in the community as adults. We are pleased to offer 7th grade students free membership to support and encourage youth to live healthy lifestyles and make responsible choices.

Teens need the following to join the program:

• A School ID, Roster, or Report Card
• A Parent or Guardian
• To Sign a Code of Conduct
• Complete a Few, Quick Forms
• Attend an Orientation

Financial Assistance

Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. At The Y, no child, family or adult is turned away due to an inability to pay.

Financial assistance awards are assessed on a case by case basis during a one-on-one, confidential session with a staff member. Those interested in applying for our financial assistance program are encouraged to download this form, or stop in to any of our branches to learn more and pick up an application.
